Genealogy is a noun, it is used to describe 'A line of descent traced continuously from an ancestor.' In more practical terms it's like a very good mystery novel, and once you are hooked on it, it's a endless looking glass into the past. What secrets, surprises are in-store for you when you start your search. My search started around 10 to 15 years ago when I asked my Dad "Who was Aunt Jane?" and my need to find out more about the family that was never talked about.
It took me about 10 years to find Aunt Jane, and what relation she was to me. Why is that important ? As a kid growing up in Belfast, N. Ireland we visited Aunt Jane in Battenburg St. while we visited our paternal Grandparents. Aunt Jane's house was a time warp, stepping into the house was going back in time 50 or more years. There was a huge fireplace were all the cooking had been done over the years, rings that moved pots in and out of the fire - it was special. On occasion Aunt Jane would bring out some old hand embroidered post cards and I would stare at them for hours (it was probably minutes, but seemed like hours). I would later find out that these post cards came from France during the War to end all Wars, WWi. I wanted them, i wanted to know the history and story behind them. I was hooked, pulled in, the bug was planted. Many years later and after moving from Belfast to Toronto Canada, and then to San Jose, California I was talking to my parents and wondered about the fate of those cards. My mum had ended up with some items from Aunt Jane's house when she died, so it was obvious that they would know, and they did know, in fact they had them, and that because I was the only one that remembered about them I could have them - almost, almost I could feel them, and then get to figure out were they came from - they were almost mine. I guess my dad forgot, as he sent them to a museum in Belfast. So I found Aunt Jane and now my quest follows those post cards to see if I can find them.
Along the way, we found out some interesting things about the family and some more family stories.
